The Academic Art Period, also known as the Academism, emerged in the late 18th century in Europe as a reaction to the excesses of the Rococo and Baroque movements. It was characterized by a return to classical art and a focus on traditional techniques and subjects. Academic art was taught in prestigious institutions, such as the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and emphasized a strict set of rules for creating "good" art. These rules included precise rendering, idealized beauty, and adherence to historical themes. The style of Academic art remained popular until the late 19th century when artists began to experiment with new styles and subject matter, leading to the emergence of modern art movements. Nonetheless, the principles of Academic art continued to be influential in art education and were taught well into the 20th century.
